Kumarakom
 
     
The village of Kumarakom is a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake, and is part of the Kuttanad region. The bird sanctuary here, which is spread across 14 acres, is a favourite haunt of migratory birds and an ornithologist's paradise. Egrets, darters, herons, teals, waterfowls, cuckoo, wild duck and migratory birds like the Siberian Stork visit here in flocks and are a fascinate the visitors. An enchanting backwater destination, Kumarakom offers visitors many other leisure options. Kumarakom is perhaps the only place in India other than Kashmir, which is known for its houseboat experience. There are many houseboats and resorts in Kumarakom which offer an accommodation by the Vembanad Lake. Kumarakom also witnesses boat races around the time of Onam, which is an important South Indian festival.
 
   
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary  
   
Kumarakom bird sanctuary is a must-visit destination. The bird watcher's paradise is located about 16 km from Kottayam, on the banks of Vembanad Lake. Migratory birds, including Siberian stork and local birds such as Egret, Teal, Water duck, and Cuckoo, are the major fascination here. The best time to visit this place is between June and August.
 
   
Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls  
   
A tantalizing waterfall, Aruvikkuzhi is located 18 km from Kottayam town, falling from a height of 100 ft. Aruvikkuzhi waterfalls comes across as a beautiful picnic spot. Here, water streams create a tinkling sound as they make their way through the landscape that houses beautiful rubber plantations.

The intoxicating backwater cruise in Kumarakom is a thrilling experience.
